Occupying an area of 258,000 square meters, the project commenced on December 24, 2003 and was finished on June 28, 2008. In April 2005, the topping out of the concrete structure was held ahead of schedule as a result of the endeavor of all the construction participants, making a new record of finishing the stadium structure of 20,000 square meters within 5 months. The welding of the steel structure was concluded in August 2006 and the supportive trusses were successfully removed from skeleton of the stadium on September 17, 2006.The hosting and installation of all the sub-structure elements were finished at the end of November. At the decisive stage of the project in 2008, many difficulties were encountered, such as too many final design modifications, too much project alteration due to requests from different sources, paralleling operations interfering with each other, shortage of labor forces and so on. To address all those problems, construction workers made their final spurts with unyielding efforts and mobilized everything they could to finish timely the installation, commissioning, and rectification phases of mechanics/electrics, renovation and decoration, the surrounding urban construction and greening, membrane structure and so on. The test events of race walking and marathon in April and field and tracks in May were held successfully. The acceptance inspection for 12 special projects, 6 sub-units, 27 branches, 86 sub-branches, 425 sub-projects were totally finished. The final acceptance inspection was made by the four parties and Inspection Certificate was issued on June 15. The celebration ceremony on June 28, 2008 marked the official completion of the national stadium， the focus of the public attention since the very beginning.
