On the morning of July 5 International Institute of Welding (IIW) presented the team of BUCG’s Engineers with the Ugo Guerrera Prize of 2010 for their great contribution to the welding construction achievement in the National Stadium (Bird Nest) steel structure works. It was the first time that the Ugo Guerrera Prize was awarded to Chinese Engineers. It is understood that the Ugo Guerrera Prize is the highest award established by IIW for fabrication of welded construction. Mr. Xu Jianyuan, the General Manager, and Mr. Li Zhenchang, the Vice-general manager, of BUCG attended the award ceremony.
It was reported that more than 700 experts representing 48 nations, such as the U.S, Germany, Australia, Canada, Finland, Ukraine, Switzerland, Romania, Singapore, China, Korea, Japan, and etc, were present at the 2010 IIW Annual Assembly. BUCG’s team was recommended by Chinese Welding Society of CMES due to its outstanding performance in the construction of “Bird Nest” , which demonstrated to the world an unprecedented miracle of welding methods used in steel structure fabrication.
Link: “Bird Nest” was a fully welded steel structure. The designed consumption of steel was 42,000 tons. The weld length was 300,000 meters long. 2000 tons of welding materials was used.(Qu Jinhong)
