In early June, although the blue sky and white clouds in Beijing were pleasing, the sunshine was so harsh. On May 31, the first yellow early warning for high temperature was released in Beijing. At daytime, the temperature reached more than 35℃, and rose to 38℃ on June 5. Under the sun blazing like a ball of fire, reinforcing steel bars became scalding. In various key engineering undertaken by BUCG at home and abroad, multiple effective measures for heatstroke prevention were taken to provide safety guarantee for the construction workers sticking to their post, and ensure orderly implementation of various engineering construction.

On June 4, at the engineering site of National Speed Skating Hall, over 2000 construction workers were carrying out construction of top plate on the second floor underground underground and one-layer vertical structure on the first floor underground. In order to guarantee the completion of base level of main engineering on June 26, over 60 management personnel hadn’t been home for more than 40 days. They worked hard day and night with workers, and promoted work as scheduled every day. The iron armrests at the construction site were too scalding to hold, the workers felt like stepping on fire basket, their clothes got wet by sweat again and again, and the workers could drink up more than half bottle of water in one gulp. “First-aid kits are prepared in the medical office, the resting place and the drinking place are set up at the construction site, green bean soup is provided all day long, operation is made in non-high-temperature period, and air-conditioning device is offered in the dorm. We take multiple feasible measures to provide a good working environment as possible as we can.”, said Party Branch Secretary of the Project Department Li Fangyi.

Likewise, in the terminal building engineering of new Beijing airport undertaken by the General Engineering Contracting Department, with sufficient measures for heatstroke prevention, over 4000 construction workers worked hard in the intense heat of summer, spared no effort to carry out mechanical and electrical installation, and make construction of trimming of roofing, and preliminary improvements of non-public area. In the key projects of the engineering department including the head office of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the temporary housing for employees of Beijing Sub-CBD, Chengdu Tianfu International Airport and so on, green bean soup, tea water, chilled mineral water were provided all day long in order to bring the cool and refreshing feeling to the construction workers sticking to their post. 

Yanqing-Chongli Expressway undertaken by the General Contracting Department of Civil Works is the key guarantee project of Beijing Winter Olympic Games. It is required that main structure will be qualified for paving. In Yanqing in June, people still need to wear thick coat in the morning, while the highest temperature at noon can rise to more than 35℃. After the surface temperature comes to 45℃, the operation surface on expressway is steaming hot. In spite of this, construction workers still worked hard even though their sweat poured down from their faces.

In Yanqing renowned as “the city of summer”, the China Pavilion engineering of International Horticultural Exhibition 2019, Beijing has shown its true color of “Splendor & Auspiciousness”. More than 300 construction workers of the General Contracting Department of Construction Engineering spared no effort to make construction of multiple itemized engineering including outdoor terrace piling, indoor secondary structure masonry, mechanical & electrical installation and so on. Under the blue sky, overlooking Xiaohaituo Mountain from China Pavilion, at the engineering site of National Alpine Skiing Center with the altitude of 1800m, with mountain wind blowing now and then, people tend to ignore the ultraviolet radiation intensity of 1.5 times. After work for one day, it is common that skin on the arm is subject to peeling. The Project Department provides every construction worker with full-coverage work clothes, and two emergency cottages have been built on the “之”–shape construction sidewalk in order to provide convenience for construction workers to take a rest and drink water. Under multiple protection, the Project Department has completed all the surface soil peeling, and got through the “之”–shape construction sidewalk.

In Beijing Sub-CBD, the project team of the construction department that had just completed acceptance inspection of A1 engineering had no time for celebration, and started the construction of A5 engineering. In high temperature, they have built the gate of the site area, the safety education classrooms, annular road in the site area, temporary office area, mini-fire station and so on, the flying flag of BUCG looks especially brilliant and vivid under scorching sun.

The construction workers of Design Development Group Rail Company worked hard in the construction of rail project cluster under scorching sun. The rail company paid close attention to weather forecast for high temperature, implemented the operation system of “Work in the morning and in the evening, take a rest in the afternoon, take multiple shifts, change frequent shifts”, avoid operation during high-temperature hours, reduce intensity of continuous operation, and guarantee rest time of workers. For the construction of the project of Bid 19, Line 17, Beijing metro, green bean soup with sugar and without sugar was specially prepared for workers to choose freely. In logistics guarantee, air conditioners have been installed in the dormitory, drinking water and food hygiene management in the living area have been strengthened, strict control is made to prevent poisoning events due to food deterioration, and real-time monitoring is made against diseases subject to frequent onset in summer.

It is a huge test for gardeners working outdoors in high temperature. The gardeners responsible for the maintenance at the section of the viewing stand of Tiananmen Square would have the sense of suppression in the chest, short of breath, have scorched tongue and dry throat. They need to complete the trimming of large-area lawn, boxwood ball and Chinese rose as soon as possible and make it look neat and nice. Therefore, they have to insist on working with high intensity, and make the square well decorated quickly. At the construction site of ancient architecture of Yongning Pavilion for Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition, Project Manager of Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition from the landscaping group Zhang Rui got tanned, saying “We will not fall behind even we get peeled and lose weight. We will give full play to the spirit of BUCG as tough as iron, and complete the task in an excellent way.” Under the circumstance that measures for heatstroke prevention are well taken, he leads his team to try to establish the most beautiful Beijing International Horticultural Exhibition with the highest standard and quality.

BUCG International has 20 projects under construction in various places at home and abroad. The construction environment is either in the muggy tropical zone with the temperature above 35℃ all the year round or in Kazakhstan which is still cold. At the site of the Maldives international airport project, construction workers wear long-sleeved clothes and trousers to pave airport runways in the environment with surface environment of nearly 60℃. Although they wear long-sleeved clothes and trousers all the time, their skin color is as black as that of local people. In Maldives, BUCG employees who are not afraid of high temperature are making the construction of multiple projects including the airport reconstruction and expansion, the hydroplane terminal building, the apartment building, ancillary infrastructure and so on.

  Algeria Opera House is the first overseas engineering for which BUCG obtained the Luban Prize. In the place near Sahara Desert, construction workers engaged in the construction of SPI oil pump and the project of 1700 sets of houses for leasing and sales have got accustomed to bad weather with yellow sand all over the sky and scorching sun, and take it as a joke to wear T-shirt at daytime and wear cotton-padded jacket at nighttime. Whether under heavy rain in Southeast Asia, under sand blown all over the sky in Niger, under intense heat in Beijing, or under muggy weather in Guangzhou, employees stick to their post, shoulder responsibilities and dedicate themselves to work.
