On April 28, the list of winners for the 2025 Sustainable Development and Innovation Awards was announced in Shanghai. BUCG was awarded the "Green Finance Award" for its outstanding financing practices in the Maldives Velana International Airport Expansion and Economic Zone Project-Old Runway Renovation Project (hereinafter referred to as the Old Runway Renovation Project). This achievement makes it the first Chinese construction enterprise to receive this award. After a fierce competition involving preliminary reviews, public voting, and final interviews, BUCG ultimately stood out among five shortlisted companies and successfully won the award, making it the first Chinese construction enterprise to receive this honor. The Old Runway Renovation Project innovatively introduced third-party financial market funding and integrated ESG principles throughout the entire financing process. Ultimately, it successfully completed the financing close, becoming a model for green finance empowerment infrastructure cooperation. This project not only advanced the comprehensive construction of the national ESG management system in the Maldives, but also provided valuable experience for Chinese enterprises in their green transformation within the international infrastructure sector. The Old Runway Renovation Project will implement a full renovation of the old runway area located on the west side of the new runway, which has been constructed by BUCG. The construction will include taxiways, apron, and runway interface area pavement, with a total reconstruction area of 84,000 square meters.
