Recently, the 2025 Eighth BRAC Conference was grandly held in Beijing. At the conference, Beijing Urban Construction Eighth Construction Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as the "Eighth Company") applied for the "Revitalization of Industrial Heritage - Translation from Thermal Power Plant to Cultural and Technological Innovation Park" (Phase I Building Decoration and Renovation Project of Tianning Temple Plant Area). With innovative technology application, significant renovation results, and far-reaching demonstration significance, it successfully won the honor of "Model Case in the Field of Engineering Renovation and Reinforcement of the 2024-2025 China Urban Renewal Program", establishing a new benchmark for the revitalization of industrial heritage.
As a company deeply engaged in the field of urban renewal for many years, the Eighth Company has always been committed to revitalizing existing spaces, preserving historical heritage, and empowering urban development, continuously making efforts in the renovation of existing buildings. Previously, several benchmark projects undertaken by the Eighth Company, such as the Public Space Renovation and Upgrading Project of the Chaowai Area Renewal Demonstration Section and the West Area Business Building Renovation Project of Beijing Foreign Language Printing Factory, have successively won the excellent case awards in urban renewal issued by various professional associations. This latest award further attests to its strength in this field.
The Phase I Renovation Project of Tianning Temple plant Area, which has won this award, is located in the core area of Xicheng District, Beijing, adjacent to historical relics such as the Tianning Temple Pagoda and Baiyun Temple. The project covers a total area of 14,730.8 m2 and involves 33 individual buildings. The project, formerly known as the Beijing Second Thermal Power Plant built in 1972, is a key industrial heritage revitalization project of China Huadian Corporation. During the construction period, the Eighth Company strictly adhered to the core principles of "not increasing the floor area, restoring the old to its original state, and preserving the original industrial appearance". While protecting the historical texture of industrial relics, it fully met the modern functional requirements for the integrated development of culture, technology, and finance.
Faced with the multiple challenges of strengthening old building structures, preserving their appearance, and upgrading their functions, the team of the Eighth Company has actively tackled technical difficulties and applied a series of key technologies to enhance the load-bearing capacity of the main structures. Among them, the innovative "Construction Method for Perforated Brick Paving of Existing Building Renovation Exterior Walls" breaks through the volume limitation of traditional paving walls. While achieving the retro renovation of architectural appearance, it also ensures thermal insulation performance and structural stability, greatly shortens the construction period, and saves construction costs. In the end, the project successfully transformed the industrial plant area into the Tianning No.1 Cultural and Technological Innovation Park, which integrates cultural creativity, technological innovation, and financial services, becoming the first zero-carbon smart park in Xicheng District.
The renovated Tianning No.1 Cultural and Technological Innovation Park not only fully preserves the industrial memory of the old power plant and creates a unique open-air museum, but also holds over a hundred cultural activities every year by leveraging the spaces such as the theater and public reception room renovated from the high-rise plant buildings, achieving harmonious sharing between the park and the community. It is worth mentioning that during the implementation of the project, the Eighth Company has focused on technological innovation and practical summary, and obtained 1 invention patent, 1 utility model patent, and 1 municipal construction method. The park has also been awarded multiple honors such as "Beijing Cultural and Creative Industry Park", "Beijing Municipal Cultural Industry Park", "Beijing Internet Celebrity Check-in Place", and "Excellent Unit for Climate-Friendly Regional Pilot". It has been reported by many mainstream media and has become a model for industrial heritage revitalization and urban renewal.
